General Election called for 4th July: Alistair Carmichael responds
Responding to Rishi Sunak calling the General Election for the 4th of July, Orkney and Shetland MP Alistair Carmichael said:
“Finally. This General Election is a chance to kick the Conservatives out of government. It is also an opportunity to send a clear message to our failing and flailing SNP government in Holyrood.
“Rishi Sunak cut a sorry figure in Downing Street but we cannot feel too much sympathy for him. For years the Conservative Party has taken voters for granted and lurched from crisis to crisis while the problems facing the country are getting so much worse. They have hiked people’s mortgages and rents by hundreds of pounds a month, and left our government in a mess.
“Now is the time to vote them out and repair the damage they have done to our living standards and our economy.
“After years of infighting and decline, this is the moment to show the SNP that they cannot take Scotland for granted any longer. Their endless centralisation of services, their tax hikes and their neglect of rural and island communities has got to end – this election is our chance to put them on notice.
“In the isles we will be taking nothing for granted and fighting for every vote. The last election was a straight fight between the Liberal Democrats and the SNP and I expect that this election will be no different. We will be bringing a positive agenda to the campaign, on support for local green growth, backing local farmers, crofters and fishermen, and for improvements to our lifeline transport links – and I look forward to getting around the doors as soon as possible.”
