Government must recognise tidal energy potential in building UK industrial strategy – Carmichael
Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, has today pressed the Secretary of State for Scotland to drive support for tidal stream energy as part of the UK industrial strategy. Mr Carmichael cited tidal stream’s advantage in having a UK-based manufacturing base (with 80% of components being created in the UK) supporting additional jobs up and down the supply chain.
Speaking in the House, Mr Carmichael said:
“In terms of an industrial strategy, when he speaks with his ministerial colleagues will he focus their minds on the potential that comes from the development of tidal stream generation? That is something where there is enormous opportunity for our manufacturing sector that comes from creating a supply chain which is based here in the United Kingdom rather than having to bring capacity back from overseas.”
Responding, the Secretary of State for Scotland Ian Murray MP said:
“I agree with him – I met with EMEC in his own constituency and indeed saw the tidal resources up there. It is of course critically important for our Net Zero ambitions and to get to clean power by 2030. I’m due to meet them when I visit his constituency in the coming weeks and I will make sure it is top of the agenda.”
Reacting after the exchange, Mr Carmichael said:
“As things stand, 80% of the supply chain for tidal stream development comes from the UK, giving it huge potential as a driver of industrial growth and jobs in the isles and beyond. Maintaining and expanding support for tidal stream energy is good for our Net Zero goals and for our economy and I shall continue to drive home this message with ministers in Parliament and when they visit the isles.”
