ICC arrest warrants for Hamas and Netanyahu: UK government must uphold ruling - Carmichael

21 Nov 2024

Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, has today responded to news that the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for both Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Hamas leader Mohammed Deif. The judges said there were “reasonable grounds” the three men bore “criminal responsibility” for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity during the war between Israel and Hamas.

The impact of these warrants will in part depend on whether the ICC’s 124 member states – which include most of Europe but do not include Israel or its main ally, the United States – decide to enforce them or not.

Commenting on the news, Mr Carmichael said:

“The International Criminal Court must be free to conduct its work without fear or favour. This is a landmark decision by the court and reflects the devastating impact that this war has had on so many innocent lives.

“It is vital that the Government complies with our obligations under international law by committing to uphold this ruling, including enforcing arrest warrants if necessary. If we believe in the international rule of law then we should not be afraid to stand up for it – and the law must apply to our allies just as much as our foes.

“Whatever the outcome of this ruling, the most important goal remains to secure an immediate bilateral ceasefire and put a stop to the humanitarian devastation in Gaza, to get the hostages home and open the door to a meaningful two-state solution.”
