Papering over Tory recession and Tory tax hikes – Carmichael responds to Budget
Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, has today responded to the Chancellor’s Budget.
Mr Carmichael said:
“The overall state of this Budget is pretty thin. The Chancellor has tried to paper over a Tory recession and Tory tax hikes which have hit families across the country. I suspect, however, that very few will take the government at its word after years of declining living standards. Ministers have been straining to find some way to squeeze out more election gimmicks but voters are past listening.
“There are some positives for the isles today. The £10m investment in SaxaVord Space Centre in Shetland is welcome as they ramp up to the UK’s first vertical space launch this year. It is entirely right that we invest in the industries of the future and in quality jobs for island communities. The other half of the equation must involve a recognition of the need for tunnels so that we can unlock our full potential.
“A boost in funding from the “Long Term Plan for Towns” going to Kirkwall is also a positive, though we shall have to see the detail in what is delivered – and ensuring that outcomes are driven by the community.
“I am glad that ongoing funding for tidal stream energy under the Contracts for Difference ringfence will continue, though we still await proper clarity on support for EMEC that is needed to ramp up development. The bolder we are with our targets and support for tidal stream the faster we can build up supply chains and jobs and make the most of this success.
“A continued freeze in fuel duty will be welcomed by many in the isles who cannot rely on public transport.
“It is also good that the Chancellor has not doubled down on last year’s mistake with a further hike in spirits duty, though distillers will be disappointed that no cut in tax was forthcoming. It is emblematic of the lack of ambition from this government in its dying days – but no more than we should expect.
“Families in the isles and across the country ought to get more from their government than this shower – it is past time for a general election.”
